Wurzburg

I pedaled a measly 30 km upriver to the historical university town of Wurzburg and decided it was time for another rest day.

The town has been an important place since the bronze age with the fortified Marienburg Castle overlooking the city. The city is also home to the Wurzburg palace.

It's also a tough place to find a room when the students are just back in town.  I tried the tourist office to see if they could find me a room and was told the whole city was full unless I wanted to pay more than 150 euros. Sorry that's not going to work.

I went to the library and used their wifi to find a place just outside the old city in a pension for 50 euros. And then found a hotel for the next night in the city center for the same price. That'll work.

Wurzburg was heavily bombed during the WWII, There is a display in the Rathaus (city hall) showing what the city looked like before and after the Allied bombing. Five thousand souls perished in the bombing on one night in 1945.  But the city has been painstakingly rebuilt and you'd be hard pressed to tell it was almost totally destroyed.

I'm ashamed to say that I snuck into the palace without paying.  I just happened to be walking up to the entrance in between two tour groups who were being ushered through the ticketing area.  They thought I was part of one of the groups and I didn't say anything. Don't judge me.
