On to Koblenz

My last day on the Moselle to me about 60 km downriver to the confluence with the Rhine at Deutches Eck (Germans Corner) in Koblenz. I had come down with a cold the day before so I was feeling pretty sorry for myself as I limped along.

The hillside vineyards along the Moselle are very steep in places.  The farmers use tiny monorail tracks with gas powered carts to access the terraces and bring the harvest down hill.  There were folks harvesting all along the river. From what I could tell it looked like most of the vineyards were family owned.  Entire families were out among the vines bringing in the harvest.

Koblenz is a big city compared the towns of the Moselle. Still it was pretty easy to find a hotel and have a look around. Like most towns I had encountered, the main shopping streets in the old town have been turned into pedestrian only areas--making a nice place for wandering. I spent some time trying to find a grocery store to get the fixins for a picnic. My GPS app showed a grocery store on the block I was standing on but I couldn't figure out where it was.  After walking around it a few times, I finally found it--underground on the basement level of the mall. Go figure.
