Sanur and Sunburns

Well, now that we’re all back among the living, the Schrieve clan has discovered beach life Bali-style. Sanur is in the south of Bali but to the East of its wild better known party-town cousins of Kuta and Seminyak. It’s a baby tourist town, consisting of a sliver of a beach, lovely blue ocean, and a boardwalk with scattered “touts” pushing everything from massages to jet ski rides. While not on our original itinerary, we like it so far -- even the tiny refrigerator (as we call our A/C room) and the three beds pushed together to form what we call “the dog bed” as we feel like a pack of dogs curling up together to go to sleep.

The hotel has a lovely little pool where Anna spent the first three hours of our arrival yesterday, followed by another hour or so tonight. We spent most of the day at another beachfront hotel with a pool, Ex-pat party music (think Funkytown and Grease soundtrack) and comfy chairs. Needless to say even with ample sunblock, we’re all a little red around the edges tonight. Some of us also have new hairdos and painted toes. After being hit up several times by the wandering ladies in pink, we finally had Anna’s hair “plaited.” It took the lady a good 1 ½ hours to turn my little girl into a little baby Bo Derek. Like all “spa” treatments here it was dirt cheap (though we do tip well) and it’s easy to make it a daily habit.

Tonight we had a sad turn of events which may change the look of the blog until we get home. Someone who will remain unnamed (as it could have been any of us) dropped the digital camera during dinner. It was like one of those slow motion things where you are all holding your breath and going, “noooooooooo” but then it’s too late and what can you do? Sadly, even though both girls brought their cameras, they did not bring their power cords so we may just make do or go see what kind of black market deal we can get somewhere.

Speaking of, Sanur is supposedly the source of some of Bali’s most powerful black magic and home to some of the most feared sorcerers and healers. The cops even rely on them to help solve major crimes. That still doesn’t explain why there were security cops outside the Italian restaurant tonight at dinner unless the Mofia was in town. Some burly Bulgarians were running the pool place we were at today and sat at a table just counting the money all day long.

It’s all very interesting and tomorrow we’ll get a little more….
