Garin is upstairs recovering from a violent case of “Bali Belly” -- maybe it was the ice in his frappe or bad water at a café, you never know. He said it was almost as bad as the food poisoning we both had in Istanbul years ago from some lukewarm soup. Anyway, he seems better this morning with some Gatorade and water. I’ll take the girls into town today while he recovers and rest.
Yesterday we spent celebrating Hallie’s 14th birthday. This included a walk to town in search of some Bali sweets and a mango lassi (yogurt drink). We also had to spend about an hour at a travel agency buying tickets to Java. Turns out it is WAY farther than we thought and none of us really relish another marathon bus ride like we had in Vietnam…the dreaded night bus. So now that is done and we can have a few more days here in Ubud to chill and take in the culture.
A few nights ago we had the pleasure of seeing one of the local dance troupes perform several traditional dances. The choreography is very rigid with hundreds of individual, subtle moves including wide-eyes, delicate fingers and wrist flicks. Every movement has a meaning. During the romantic “Bumblebee” duo dance, Anna turned to me and commented as only a child can, “That is one creepy couple.“ I’m sure she meant it in a nice way. The girls have been busy dismantling the superhighway of ants that seem to find every sweet drop of Coke or cracker crumb you leave around. Guess that is our own offering to them -- U.S. style. It’s pouring rain again. We got caught it a monsoon and had to walk back from the pool (where we had just paid $10 to get in) and up the long staircase to our house. Small price to pay for the squealing and fun we had though. At least we got cooled off!
