Next Stop...Europe

Since the economy tanked we've become a little less cavalier about quitting our jobs, selling the house and taking a year-long trip. So our plans for a year's sabbatical have morphed into taking as many trips as often as we can. Vietnam was the first leg of our segmented journey. Now the next installment in our see-the-world-in-month-long-segments is to spend this July in Europe.

The plan was hatched as the dollar rose and airfare plummeted in the wake of the financial crisis. We decided that now was as good a time as any to let the kids get a taste of Europe. We'll be trying to cut costs by not traveling every day, spending some time in Eastern Europe to balance out some of the higher cost areas. This will also give us a chance to see some distinctly different cultural aspects of the continent.

We've selected six different cities in which to base ourselves. We'll spend four nights in each and will rent apartments rather than stuffing ourselves in the often-cramped European hotel rooms. By traveling only every fourth day we'll have time soak up the ambience and do some unstructured wandering in our chosen cities.

We'll start by flying to London for four days to acclimate in an apartment near Hyde Park. Next we'll catch a train to Edinburgh, Scottland. From there Ryan Air will take us to Krakow, Poland where we'll visit Auschwitz and the neighboring salt mine. From there we'll travel to Budapest, then down the Danube to Vienna. We'll finish our trip with four days in Venice!
