Goodbye Paris...on to Amsterdam

After successfully returning the rental car to Hertz (yeah, no more driving in big foreign cities!) yesterday we found our charming, Hemingwayesque hotel in Montparnasse. While the rooms and carpets were a bit tattered around the edges, we had a lovely view of the Parisian streets and cafes below.

Court set off in search of Laundromat where she successfully got a load going on her own. She also met a former American gentleman who relocated to Paris 27 years ago after being “seduced” by the city. It was his birthday He gave her several restaurant recommendations, one of which turned out to be magnifique! 1900 Montparnasse is a historic landmark decorated Belle Epoque art noveau style with mirrors, floral designed ceilings and statue lamps -- very elegant, almost like eating in a museum. Even though we were dressed in our backpacking tourist wear, the swirling waiters treated us like royalty.

We ordered a small plate of escargot (snails) for Anna who had been wanting to try them while in France. Three of us also ordered a menu of five courses plus wine and coffee. Hal got a few appetizers type dishes with no meat (hard to find in France, truly). Anna had duck, Garin steak and Court, salmon on spinach. It was truly a night to remember and worth the splurge.
We are now eating sandwiches (McDonald’s chicken nuggets for Anna) on a train to Amsterdam. They are forecasting rain for the week but heck, after our camping adventure and two new raincoats we can handle it! We plan to hit a few museums, including Van Gough and Anne Frank House, as well as take a canal ride and visit a famous market. Should be a little more relaxing than Paris but still plenty to see and do. Thanks to our friends Deb and Ali for
