Kinsale to Dingle

Our morning was spent having a last look around Kinsale. We toured Charles's Fort on the east side of the harbor. The classic star fort (17th century) is one of two built by the Brits over the years to try and keep control of the harbor. Rather than defending against foreign invaders however, the fort played a role in two civil wars--that of the English and later the Irish civil war. Later still the fort served as a training ground for Irish troops being sent to the front in WWI.

We then hopped in the Opal for the two and a half hour drive to Dingle. Dingle is the main town on the Dingle peninsula, one of several promontories on Ireland's southwest corner.  The Ring of Kerry is the most famous peninsula, but Dingle has fewer tour buses, is a hub of traditional Irish music and the sights are supposed to be just as good. We'll have a look and see for ourselves.
