I'm sitting in a lovely courtyard in our hostal in Miraflores--an upscale district in Lima. In front of me are walls painted in bright Mediterranean colors and draped with geraniums and climbing vines. Behind me is a cage filled with songbirds which are almost loud enough to drown out the sound of jackhammers working in the street outside.
We arrived very late last night. The flights were fine but we had a snafu at the airport when our scheduled van pick up did not arrive. We took a taxi instead--but were somewhat concerned given all the warnings we had seen about taxis and late night arrivals in Lima. It worked out fine.
Today will be a low-key day of trying to get acclimated to the city.
